Information Display - Extracting Information

For situations where the information presented by ServerInternals is needed by another application, the displayed view, or the details for a single element, can be extracted to the clipboard or files as required.

Copying Images And Lists

The image of a status indicator, gauge or chart, and the text contents of an LED matrix or a list can be copied to the clipboard by right-clicking the element, and selecting Copy from the context menu. Note that when in design mode, the Copy operation will put the element design information on the clipboard instead.

By default, an image is copied to the clipboard at its currently displayed size, and the contents of lists are copied using only the columns selected for display. If the Shift key is held down when displaying the menu, further options allow the image to be copied at the configured capture size or at the size of the current monitor or all columns to be copied as appropriate.

Exporting Images And Lists

By default, an image is exported at its currently displayed size, and the contents of lists are exported using only the columns selected for display. If the Shift key is held down when displaying the menu, further options allow the image to be exported at the configured capture size or at the size of the current monitor or all columns to be copied as appropriate.

Images are exported in one of three formats; Portable Network Graphics (PNG), Windows Bitmap (BMP) or Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG). LED matrix contents are exported as text. List contents are exported either as comma-separated values (CSV) or as a Microsoft Excel XML-formatted workbook (XLS). For images and lists, the format is determined automatically from the filename's extension, defaulting to PNG and CSV respectively if the extension is not recognised.

Capturing A Panel, Frame Or Dashboard

Rather than exporting a number of images individually, it is possible to capture the combined image of the graphical elements for a single panel, all the panels for a frame or the whole dashboard by right-clicking to the right of the large icon bar at the top of the display and selecting the appropriate option from the Capture sub-menu of the context menu.

The location used to store the images, the filename format, the file format and the overall image size can be set from the Image Capture tab within Options for the Analyser and Watcher and from the Image Capture tab within the properties of the top-level ServerInternals node for the MMC snap-in. If using a custom filename template for the images, a number of substitutions are available.

In the Analyser and Watcher applications, a Quick Capture item on the Tools menu and toolbar button provides a fast method to capture the whole dashboard.

Extracting Raw Chart Data

The raw time and numeric data for a chart can be extracted by holding down the Shift key, right-clicking the chart and selecting a suitable option from the Data sub-menu on the context menu. When putting the data on the clipboard, the text is always formatted as rows of standard comma-separated values, with one header row. When saving the data to a file, the file can be formatted as a standard comma-separated value (CSV) plain text file with one header row or as a Microsoft Excel XML-formatted workbook (XLS). The format used is determined automatically from the filename's extension, defaulting to CSV if the extension is not recognised.
